Marieke is a Dutch native from the Netherlands. As a child she traveled extensively with her family, calling three continents and diverse cultures home. One of six kids, she remembers life as fun, hectic and very interesting. A born globe-trotter, she always knew she could live anywhere in the world. Marrying Minnesotan-born Kurt Kiehne in 2001 brought her and her then 10-year-old son to the Bayfield peninsula.
“I lived the same journey as many of my clients – I fell in love with Lake Superior and the tremendous quality of space, air, and water we enjoy here. The dream of being here forever was realized with ownership of property.” Marieke and Kurt built their home on 15 acres of forest land in the town of Washburn. They built multiple structures for work, play and receiving guests who repeat the cycle!
“Blending into the Washburn and Bayfield communities as new-comers was easy,” she says. “People have been so welcoming and kind. It took us no time at all to feel completely at home.”
With a degree in marketing and PR supported with experience in many fields of industry, Marieke decided to combine her personal, management and organizational skills into a real estate career. “I’ve always been detail oriented with a fetish for file work,” she laughs. “As a real estate professional, follow-through and organization are really important. I love that part of the work.”
Even more than files and real estate itself, Marieke loves people – and what makes them tick! As a certified life coach, she enjoys guiding folks through the many emotions that come with decisions around buying and selling property. “I think that sets me apart and my clients often comment on it. I have made a lot of friends in the 16 years that I have been a realtor in this area. The relationship doesn’t end when the transaction closes!”
“Apostle Islands Realty is a wonderful fit for me. I really love our team and the combined knowledge and experience we all build on; our beautiful office, the location in the heart of the Bayfield summer-buzz, sharing success and laughter – it’s great!”
Apart from real estate, Marieke enjoys traveling (“It’s in my blood.”), classical music, officiating weddings, reading, and helping people in need – especially in bereavement. “When I was little, I thought I would be a nurse. But I can’t do blood, so that wasn’t the right choice. Luckily there are many ways to give care and compassion, to hold people through difficult times. It brings out the best Me!”
